REL 321 Religion in America
CONCEPT MAP 2: Secular vs Sacred knowledge – the hyphen in religio-culture
After reading the Kelly chapter and viewing the documentary about Chaco in class.
First, create a graphic organizer to show two sets of information about practices commonly labeled “religious” when speaking about indigenous religo-cultures:
- varieties of knowledge topics that are encoded in these practices, and
- the practices or ways that encode these knowledges.
Then, after mapping these two sets, find a way to indicate which knowledges and practices are practical and which “religious”. (highlighter, color coding, shape coding, etc…)
CONCEPT MAP 4: Western European Answers to Questions of “Discovery”
- Using a comparison layout, compare the ways that Catholic Christians (Spanish & French) and Protestant Christians (English) were both similar in their views and approaches to the people they colonized and how their views and approaches differed from each other.
- Add 1-3 notes for each branch of Christianity explaining what about their religions influenced their approaches to the colonial encounter.
These notes can explain similarities or differences or a combination.
Draw on the class discussions and lectures, more than the readings, but you may find readings helpful for connecting why these two Christian traditions held similar & differences.
CONCEPT MAP 5: Jewish Entanglements within colonization
Begin your map with the Spanish (1492) & Portuguese (1496) Expulsions & Inquisitions (Spain began 1487 & Portugal began 1536).
Connect the various ways Sephardi Jews engaged colonialism to their experiences/ the impacts of Iberian persecution.
CONCEPT MAP 8: African Religio-Culture in the United States
Map the major religious traditions that Africans brought with them to the Americas through the colonial slave trade.
Note 2-3 similarities all three traditions share and 1-2 qualities that are unique to each tradition.
CONCEPT MAP 9: Patterns of Awakenings (Ch 1 & 2)
This mind-map explores the definition of “Awakenings” in Chapter 1.
There are three ways you can do this. CHOOSE ONE:
- Collect definitions of “awakenings” throughout Chapter 1 then map (list or illustrate) these definitions.
- Map the five stages of an “awakening”.
- Map the socio-cultural process of and awakening (crisis to resolution). This approach lends itself to a before-during-after organization.
EXTRA CREDIT (10-pts)
- Map (list or illustrate) the cultural core of American culture (hint: many characteristics) as described in Chapter 2.
CONCEPT MAP 10: First Great Awakening (Ch 3)
For this mind-map you can choose one of the following set of key questions and organizational structures:
CONTENT FOCUS SET #1:
organize by cause-effect: Causes –> Process –> Outcomes
- Overall, what changed in American religio-culture during the First Great Awakening?
- How did problems in the cultural core stabilize?
CONTENT FOCUS SET #2:
organize by geographic region: New England, Middle Colonies, and Southern Colonies
For each region of the colonies, identify:
- 1-3 major individuals involved in the Awakening in that area
AND
- 1-3 key effects of that figure had in that region.
